The Rooster and the Golden Roost
Once in a yard where peace would reign,
And order ruled the fair domain,
A Rooster rose. Oh, what a sight!
In feathers colorful and bright,
With golden tail and crest aflame,
He loudly barked his heavy claim!
He promised all the flock around:
«Greatness again will here be found!
Our coop will grow both rich and grand,
The finest wing in all the land!»
He flew up high, spread out his wings:
«I hold the source of secret things!
Why should we look at neighboring geese?
They only disrupt our native peace.
Let’s build a fence above the roof,
To keep the strangers well aloof!»
The ducks nearby began to sigh,
While hens adored the loud outcry,
And praised the screamer through the town:
«How great the head that wears the crown!»
But here’s the flaw: when mornings rose,
Instead of counting grain he chose
To pick a fight with every goose,
And turn the turkeys’ tempers loose.
He split the hens in strict degrees,
And shunned the ones he failed to please.
He wasted grain on grand repairs,
To gold-plate all his roosting chairs,
To show the yard his shining seat,
Where stars and birds could never meet.
Meanwhile, the Fox behind the trees
Observed his movements with great ease…
While inside arguments would boom,
The barnyard faced a gathering doom.
Moral:
It happens in our modern life:
Some people see the grandeur in untruth.
While on the fence the rooster leaps and crows,
And praises loud his golden seat and rows,—
The divided coop in bitter weeping breaks,
While in the woods the hungry fox awakes.
