(BBC News)- Health leaders in England are calling for the reintroduction of some Covid restrictions to avoid a winter crisis.
The NHS Confederation wants the government to move to Plan B , which includes mandatory face coverings in crowded and enclosed spaces, should be implemented.
Plan B is a back-up strategy to protect the health service.
The NHS Confederation called for Plan B because cases have been rising .
Some Covid restrictions must immediately be reintroduced if England is to avoid «stumbling into a winter crisis», health leaders have warned.
What is Plan B?
IF the NHS came under «unsustainable pressure», the UK government could bring in the following measures :
- Introducing mandatory Covid passports
- Making face covering compulsory
- Advising people to work from home
- Communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and that they need to behave more cautiously
Another lockdown is rather unlikely.
Even if Plan B were implemented, it would only bring England effectively in line with restrictions still in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
No single event or set of figures would trigger Plan B, but scientific advisers are monitoring:
- hospitalisations
- rapid rates of change in figures
- the overall state of the NHS
