COP26: Climate Action Network  (CAN) granted Japan the Fossil of the Day Award at COP26 after Kishida speech

COP26

nternational nongovernmental organization working to reduce global warming granted Japan the Fossil of the Day Award on Tuesday (November,2, 2021)- Informs The Japantimes THE INDEPENDENT VOICE IN ASIA,  3/11/2021 on its website.

  • Climate Action Network  (CAN) is presenting the award every day during the COP26 to countries they  believe  are  slow to act in the fight against climate change.
  • The NGO said on Tuesday that it had chosen Japan, Norway and Australia as recipients.

On Tuesday, the award was   granted  to Japan .

Japan was picked as the recipient of the award as CAN believes that a speech delivered by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a COP26 summit Tuesday contained elements leading to the promotion of thermal power generation, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Japanese PM said his government will “undertake efforts toward net zero emissions” in Asia, which he hailed as “the engine of global economic growth.

Kishida said in his speech that Japan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46 % in  2030 from 2013 levels.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida has pledged up to $10 billion in funds over five years to assist Asia along the path to zero carbon emissions, The Japan Times reported.

In the speech, Kishida pledged Japan’s support to developing nations in Asia that promote power generation using ammonia and hydrogen, believed to be effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while failing to mention whether Japan will end coal-fired thermal power generation.

  • CAN said Japan needs to understand that these premature and costly technologies will lead to the production of fossil fuels.
